A PDF fixes the layout, so what you see is exactly what the recipient sees. A DOCX file re-flows based on the fonts and the version of Word installed on the reader's machine, which is why a carefully formatted CV can arrive with broken spacing or a page break in the wrong place. Conversion is usually faithful, but a few things are worth checking on the output. Unusual or licensed fonts may be substituted if they are not embedded, which changes line lengths. Very wide tables can be clipped at the page margin. Headers, footers and page numbering normally carry across correctly, as do hyperlinks in most cases. Tracked changes and comments may or may not appear depending on how the original was saved, so accept or reject changes before converting anything you are sending externally.
Open the finished PDF and scan it properly rather than trusting the conversion blindly. Confirm the page count matches the original, check that no heading has been orphaned at the bottom of a page, make sure any table still fits inside the margins, and click one or two hyperlinks to confirm they survived. For a CV or an application, this thirty second check is what stops a formatting error reaching the person deciding on you.
