Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, the standard tip at a sit-down restaurant is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. 15% is considered acceptable, 18% is average, and 20%+ shows great appreciation. For exceptional service, 25% or more is generous. For takeout, 0-10% is common.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Technically, you should tip on the pre-tax subtotal since tax goes to the government, not the server. However, many people tip on the total (including tax) for simplicity, and either is acceptable. The difference is usually small.
How does bill splitting work?
Enter the total bill amount, select a tip percentage, and choose the number of people splitting. The calculator divides both the tip and total evenly, showing each person's share. Use the round-up feature to avoid dealing with exact change.
What does the round-up feature do?
When enabled, the total bill (after tip) is rounded up to the next whole dollar. This makes payment easier, especially when splitting. The effective tip percentage adjusts slightly upward. For example, a $47.32 total rounds up to $48.00.
Is tipping different in other countries?
Yes. In the US, tips are expected (15-20%). In Japan, tipping is considered rude. In Europe, a small tip (5-10%) or rounding up is common but not expected since service charges are often included. Always check if a service charge is already added to your bill.
