How Fuel Cost is Calculated

Fuel Needed = Distance / Fuel Efficiency

Total Cost = Fuel Needed x Fuel Price

  • Metric: Distance in km, efficiency in km/l, price in ₹/L
  • Imperial: Distance in miles, efficiency in mpg, price in $/gal
  • Round trip doubles the one-way distance before calculating
  • Cost per person divides the total cost equally among all passengers
  • Actual fuel costs may vary based on driving conditions, traffic, terrain, and vehicle load

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate fuel cost?
Divide your trip distance by your vehicle's mileage (km/l or mpg) to get total fuel needed. Then multiply by the fuel price per liter or gallon. For example: 500 km ÷ 15 km/l = 33.3 liters × ₹100/l = ₹3,333.
What is the difference between km/l and mpg?
km/l (kilometers per liter) is used in most countries. mpg (miles per gallon) is used in the US and UK. Higher numbers mean better fuel efficiency in both systems. Use the metric/imperial toggle to switch between them.
How does cost splitting work?
Enter the number of passengers (including the driver) and the calculator divides the total fuel cost equally. This gives you a fair per-person cost for carpooling or group road trips.
What are the preset vehicle types?
The calculator includes presets for common vehicle types: Car (15 km/l), SUV (10 km/l), Bike (40 km/l), and Truck (5 km/l). These are average values - your actual mileage may vary based on driving conditions.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free with no signup required. All calculations happen in your browser - no data is sent to any server.
