Shopping Tips

  • Always calculate the final price including tax before buying
  • Compare unit prices when choosing between different package sizes
  • A "buy one get one 50% off" deal is really just 25% off total
  • Stacking discounts (e.g., 20% then 10%) is not the same as 30% off
  • Check if the "original price" was actually the regular price

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then divide by 100 to get the discount amount. Subtract that from the original price to get the sale price. For example, 20% off $100: discount = (100 × 20) / 100 = $20, so sale price = $100 - $20 = $80. This calculator does all of that instantly.
How do I find the original price if I know the sale price?
Use the Reverse Discount Calculator section. Enter the sale price and the discount percentage that was applied. The tool calculates the original price using the formula: Original Price = Sale Price / (1 - Discount% / 100). For example, if the sale price is $80 after a 20% discount, the original was $80 / 0.80 = $100.
Can I add tax to the discounted price?
Yes. Enter an optional tax rate percentage in the main calculator. The tool applies the discount first, then calculates the tax on the discounted price, and shows you the final total including tax. This is how most retailers calculate tax - on the sale price, not the original price.
How does the price comparison work?
Enter the price and quantity (or size) for two products. The tool calculates the unit price for each (price ÷ quantity) and highlights which option gives you more value for your money. This is useful for comparing different package sizes at the grocery store.
Is stacking discounts the same as adding them?
No. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is NOT the same as 30% off. With stacked discounts, the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Example: $100 with 20% off = $80, then 10% off $80 = $72. But 30% off $100 = $70. The stacked discounts give you $72, not $70.
