Compress PDF files to reduce file size online for free. Choose your compression level and download a smaller PDF instantly.
Free online PDF compressor that reduces PDF file size directly in your browser. Upload any PDF and choose from three compression levels: High Quality (minimal compression, best visuals), Balanced (good quality at smaller size), or Maximum Compression (smallest file size). The tool works by re-rendering each page as an optimized JPEG image and rebuilding the PDF, giving you significant file size reductions. See a visual comparison of original vs compressed size with exact savings percentage. Try different compression levels instantly without re-uploading. All processing happens client-side using pdfjs-dist and pdf-lib - your files never leave your device, making this tool completely private and secure. Perfect for emailing large PDFs, uploading to portals with file size limits, or archiving documents. No signup, no watermarks, no limits.
Most oversized PDFs are oversized for one of three reasons. The commonest is embedded images saved at print resolution, typically 300 DPI or higher, when the file will only ever be read on a screen at 72 to 150 DPI. The second is embedded fonts, where a full font family is packed into the file rather than only the characters actually used. The third is scanned pages, where every page is stored as a full-colour photograph rather than as text. Knowing which of the three applies to your file tells you how much compression you can realistically expect.
A text-heavy PDF produced from a word processor is already efficient and will usually shrink by only 10 to 30 percent, because there is little redundant data to remove. A PDF full of photographs or screenshots often drops by 60 to 90 percent, since downsampling images is where nearly all the savings live. A scanned document sits in between and depends heavily on whether it was scanned in colour or greyscale. If your file barely shrinks, that is normally a sign it was already optimised, not a sign the tool failed.
Most compression is done to clear a specific ceiling. Gmail and most mail servers cap attachments at 25 MB. Many government and university upload forms cap at 5 MB, and some job application portals cap at 2 MB per document. Visa and passport application systems are often the strictest, sometimes as low as 1 MB. Compress in stages and check the result: it is better to make two moderate passes and keep the text readable than to crush the file once and find the scan is no longer legible.
